The copilot immediately attempted to control the aircraft and, once he had regained control, initiated a rapid descent to FL110. Another flight attendant then strapped himself into the left jump seat and was able to grasp both of the commander's legs, but not before he had been sucked a further 6 to 8 inches out of the window frame. The copilot was able to make an emergency landing at Southampton, while the flight attendant held the commander by the ankles until after the aircraft had landed. The captain survived the accident and suffered only frostbite and some fractures.
