Aloha Airlines Flight 243 departed Hilo en route to Honolulu on the 28th of April 1988. When the Boeing 737 levelled off at the top of its climb, the heads of both pilots were suddenly jerked back by a blast. The cockpit door was blown away and the pilots could see blue sky back in the cabin where the roof had been! The 89 passengers saw nearly six metres of cabin roof disappear, and some saw a flight attendant swept through the hole into the open. The two other flight attendants had been standing in the aisle and were blown to the floor. One was seriously injured and a seated passenger had to hold on to her to keep her in the aircraft. The other attendant crawled along the aisle, clinging on to seat legs and comforting passengers. Not all of the structure had torn away cleanly. There were jagged bits of metal being battered by the slipstream, then breaking loose and flying back among the passengers. Most of the passengers were injured, some seriously.
